What 1st grade looks like

By 1st grade, our students aren't learning Spanish so much as learning in Spanish. About 90% of the day still happens in the language — morning meeting, math, and project (mission) based learning — with the other 10% given to focused English literacy, so reading and writing grow on both sides. Classrooms stay two-way: roughly half native English speakers, half native Spanish speakers, becoming bilingual together.

Project-based learning gets more ambitious this year, and it doesn't stay indoors — like the climbing trip where our K–1 students lived out the month's verse, "be strong and courageous," on a real rock face. Each month brings a new character trait and memory verse, and a family field study that parents join too.

The weekly rhythm

  • Mon–ThuIn person, 8:30 AM – 2:30 PM. Full immersion school day.
  • FridayVirtual day — live touchpoint 9:00–10:00 AM, then structured at-home follow-up.
  • Sat–SunClosed. Rest and family time.

We run a year-round calendar — roughly six weeks on, one week off, with longer breaks at Christmas and the end of the school year, still about 180 school days. Dates live on the school calendar.

What families should know

1st grade is the last entry point for new students. The immersion model depends on Spanish skills built from the earliest grades, so after 1st grade we don't take new students — seats in 2nd grade and up belong to students growing up through the school. If your child is in 1st grade or younger, the door is open.

1st grade families can use the NC Opportunity Scholarship — Sol & Son is an approved Direct Payment School with NCSEAA, so funds flow directly to the school. Tuition, fees, and scholarship tiers are on the tuition page.
